Raman Yakauleuski: “Concern over “tightening screws” is reasonable”

  • 10.07.2008, 10:17

Recently a pro-governmental “political analyst” and the head of the so-called analytical centre “EcooM” Syarhei Musiyenka has offered to set a moratorium on mass opposition rallies before those responsible in Minsk blasts found. Will the regime listen to this opinion?

- It should be noted that the head of a “sociological” structure has made this proposal. This structure is known for its apologetics of the current regime, an analyst Raman Yakauleuski noted in an interview to “Zavtra tvojej strany”. – He has been chosen as a herald of this initiative now. Silence of the notorious “deputy” Syarhei Kastsyan, a hard-liner, is attracting attention. It is not an independent proposal. It should have been expected that letters of “workers” are to flood, demanding “to harden policy”, “to tighten screws” and so on. But the concern over “tightening screws” is shared not only by opposition, but by many more people, and its concern is reasonable”.

- Almost anything could be expected, -- a social scientist Alyaksandr Sasnou believes. – People are detained for nothing already in relation with the blast in Minsk already. It is the Belarusian regime, what else could be said? Everything is abundantly clear in this situation.

- Appearance of this man on TV has always been connected to realization of this or that project, this or that scenario of the regime’s actions, -- believes the chairman of the United Civil Party Anatol Lyabedzka. – He was a mouthpiece proclaiming what happened later, or some figures necessary for the government agencies. This man is a part of the general scenario, and it's no accident such a statement has appeared. We are made to understand that there would be even harsher scenario, and screws are to be tightened more.

- The first steps observed now – searches, and that opposition activists are harassed under the disguise of the blast, -- confirm the predictions that it would be difficult for the regime to abstain from a temptation to use this blast for even harsher treatment of its political opponents, -- a political analyst Alyaksandr Klaskouski says. – Though, reassurances have been made at the highest level that no “screws tightening” would take place, the reality shows that it’s hard for the regime to abstain from that. So I do not rule out that such statements could be joyfully added to armoury, and really extensive prohibitive measures could be starte used. They would primarily concern street rallies which disquiet the regime most.

Under a pretext that further accidents are to be prevented, they [rallies] are to be smothered and suppressed even more than before, Klaskouski believes.
