Viktar Skarabahatau: 25 March is real state holiday

What does anniversary of Belarusian National Republic (BNR) formation mean for the history of Belarus? Head of “Belaruskaya Kapela” Viktar Skarabahatau thinks it is the most significant event of the XX century for Belarusian state and Belarusian nation.

What is 25 March for the Belarus of today? What is the best way to celebrate this date in view of famous Belarusians? Viktar Skarabahatau, honoured artist of Belarus, famous opera singer, head of “Belaruskaya Kapela,” who was detained in 1990ies for celebration of the Freedom Day, spoke on this topic on Radio Svaboda.

– This date is absolutely exclusive for the Belarusian people, because if the Belarusian National Republic hadn’t been proclaimed, there wouldn’t have been the Belarusian Soviet Socialistic Republic. Of course, the Republic of Belarus wouldn’t have been proclaimed, too. It is a fundamental event in the history of Belarus and Belarusian nation. We need to celebrate it in a proper way, as it is a holiday of the state, irrespective of our attitude towards this event (some people like it, while others don’t like). But objectively it is the most significant event of the XX century for Belarusian state and the nation.
